A LITTLE DEEPER
My arms and legs are covered with bruises making it difficult to sit still for my morning drive into Indian Springs. I forgot all about the pole kisses and the soreness that come with dancing, not to mention the headache that comes from drinking too much. I don’t see how Sheila woke up this morning, let alone got her kids off to daycare, and the baby to mommy and me yoga class. I wish I would try to live her life for one day. I can barely take care of myself let alone four children and a husband. Just hearing about her day makes me tired.
Although I sucked down four Advil tablets, the throbbing in my head still hasn’t subsided. Charlie calling and waking me up bright and early didn’t help, either. He was up my ass with his whole “Dig deeper, Keke! I smell a Pulitzer!” mantra at the crack of dawn. Does the man ever sleep?
All Charlie wants to hear is the nasty shit he dreams about, but this murder is about more than lust and jealousy. Last night wasn’t the first time I saw Monaka’s open eyes in my dreams, and my gut tells me it’s a clue to something bigger. I also know that C knows something about it but she’s not going to give up the truth to me or HoneyMama if she can help it. I’m going to ask Drew to focus in on C to get the missing answers. He’s always had a way of working the truth out of women, even C’s hard ass.
“Good morning, sunshine,” Drew says as I put my car in park in front of The Spot. “It’s nice to see you as always, Ms. McCoy.”
“And you as well.” I turn off the ignition and exit my car. I stand still against the car door for a moment and adjust to my all-over body pain.
“What the hell happened to you?” Drew asks, noticing my stiff composure.
“The pole, that’s what,” I say, exposing the dark bruises on my biceps. “And way too much wine.”
Drew tries to hide his smile, but his pretty whites shine through. “Been a while, huh, Brandy?” Drew offers his arm for support and I gladly accept.
“A while?” I say, looping my hand through his elbow and allowing him to lead me up the porch steps. “Shit. I feel like Old Lady Moses.”
“Girl, please. When I saw you up on that stage yesterday I thought I was having a flashback,” Drew says, causing my cheeks to flush. He opens the front door and follows me inside to the cool foyer. “You looked good, if I do say so myself.”
Drew glances at me over his shades. I return the attention, imagining which part of his body I want to kiss first. This man is every bit of sexy and knows it.
“It’s about time you showed up,” John says, fucking up the mood. This guy is worse than Charlie.
“John,” Drew says, removing his sunshades. “Anything new?”
“Not a damned thing,” John says.
